Synopsis

Scenes from the visit of Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward, Duke of Windsor) to South Africa, May 1925.

Main title and credits (33). MS Prince of Wales amongst a crowd shaking hands. He shakes with his left hand as his right is bandaged (50-76). "Stellenbosch paid whole-hearted tribute to the Prince's personality." (82). Crowds running down a street are followed by people pulling a carriage bearing the Prince (just visible), they are followed by further running crowds (115). "At Oudtshoorn, the Prince spent an interesting hour on an ostrich farm." (130). A crowd stand behind a large wire fence, two Europeans and an African capture an ostrich from a group. They hood it and corral it. MS the Prince is seen next to the captured ostrich as the farmer shows off the feathers. The Prince cuts off a number of feathers (237). LS the Prince, wearing an ostrich feather in his hat, leaves a farm building, accompanied by dignitaries, and crosses the farm yard to watch a group of young ostriches (244-264). "After a week-end spent at Sir Abe Bailey's farm near Colesberg, the Prince rode back to the town at the head of a fine commando." (278). ELS of the Prince (just visible on a white horse?) at the head of a long column of riders (320). They ride into Colesberg creating much dust (332). "Next day, Port Elizabeth turned out en masse to great His Royal Highness." (347). HAS of the crowds as the royal motorcade passes through (364). HAS of the crowds and stage; closer view as crowd cheer Prince on stage (406). "A students' rag enlivened the proceedings at Grahamstown. Imitation soldiers saved the Prince from imitation Zulus." (422). LS filmed from an elevated position; the royal motorcade is stopped by a group of `Zulus'. Soldiers arrive and disperse the Zulus. A hand-drawn carriage is hauled up the car. The Prince alights from his car and enters the carriage. The whole procession, followed by large crowds, moves off (524). "A native meeting awaiting the Prince at Kroonstad offered a rich study in types - and humour". (539). An African in top hat and tails; a line of women in long black dresses with leopard-skin hats; the back of an African wearing a top hat, he turns to camera; a baby on the ground with a Union flag; musicians and conductor intercut with further shots of the baby and other well-dressed African men; the baby salutes (645). "Maseru was the scene of an impressive gathering of natives, who came in from all parts of Basutoland". (660). Basuto [Sotho] arriving for the gathering on horseback; large crowds of them cross the plains of Lesotho (709). Arrival of the Prince by car; and greetings from three suited Chiefs (738). The Prince presents silver-topped walking sticks to the Chiefs (744-763). Ladysmith: royal motorcade with cavalry escort passes under huge grass/hay ceremonial archway (776-812). View of plain and hill of Spion Kop (820-841). Prince and large entourage cross the crest of the hill. One man carries a large Union Flag (868). "One the crest of the height the Prince walked beside the old Boer trench, in which are buried the British dead." (868). Prince and entourage walk along the fenced in white-washed stones marking the grave (883). CU of white-washed iron cross with words `To the memory of British soldiers' (895). Durban: crowds around and people standing on a statue waiting for the arrival of the Prince (909-924). Arrival of the Prince at the town hall (?) to civic welcome (941). March past of sailors and soldiers intercurt with Prince taking the salute (1007). British Instructional logo (1014ft).
